How to take care of your jewellery

How to take care of your jewellery?

Jewellery is an essential part of a woman's life. Whether it’s a finishing touch to an outfit or that one special piece that holds sentimental value, jewellery plays an important part in our lives. Every piece of jewellery needs to be taken good care of, otherwise, it could lose its luster quickly. Let's take a quick look at the ways you can take good care of your favourite jewellery pieces to make them last longer.

Habit of cleaning your jewellery

Jewellery cleaning should be a regular part of any woman's routine — and done on the same day or evening that you wear your jewellery. However, many people don't really notice the build-up of dirt and grime on their jewellery until it's too late and they need to do an emergency treatment. By putting in the time and effort to clean your jewellery regularly, you can avoid or at least minimize any buildup from getting out of control.

How to clean your jewellery?

Always have a polishing cloth to wipe your jewellery. A polishing cloth will help you gently remove the dirt and oil streaks from your jewellery without scratching or damaging the surface of your jewellery. You can soak the jewellery in lukewarm clean water to clean them but after soaking dry them immediately. Also, please avoid using harsh soaps or any kind of chemicals for cleaning your jewellery.

Prevent tarnishing

Tarnishing is a not-so-nice result of the chemical oxidation of silver. Basically, it happens with the contact of silver with oxygen and the body's chemistry can be a catalysator of the process. We work hard every day to enhance the technology to minimize the effect by adding different protective layers to the jewellery but none of them are everlasting and eventually wear off. For that reason, we would recommend removing your jewellery before engaging in sports or workouts. In contact with sweat, your jewellery can easily tarnish, so this will help to protect the finish to ensure it lasts as long as possible and stays looking gorgeous.
Usually, your jewellery will maintain in good condition as long as you treat it well and wear pieces that are suitable for the activities you choose. Follow some of these rules to ensure your jewellery works as hard as you do - and lasts just as long!

Remove your jewellery while doing these activities:

  • Sauna, jacuzzi, shower or spa
  • Cooking and cleaning
  • Applying make up creams
  • Spraying perfume
  • Sunbathing - avoid strong direct sunlight

“But my jewellery is already tarnished - what should I do now?”
Our first recommendation, in this case, would be to get hold of a special silver cleaning cloth. Such clothes are available in silver-selling retail stores and specialized merchants. They are very efficient in removing tarnish because they are immersed in special chemicals. However, you should be careful with gold-plated silver jewellery as this chemical can damage the gold layer.

There are also ways to remove tarnish with things available in your household. You would need a small bowl, tin foil, soda, salt and hot water. Cover the inside of the bowl with tin foil, add the jewellery, then sprinkle 1:1 salt and soda mixture on the jewellery and pour over the hot water. Let the jewellery sit in the fizzling water for 15-20 seconds and then remove it from the water and set it to dry.

For slightly tarnished silver you can also use lemon acid mixture. It is even possible to remove tarnish with toothpaste but you should definitely avoid those pastes with a whitening effect! So yeah - you can, in some cases, brush your jewellery like your teeth.
Regardless of the means you use to remove tarnish, new tarnishing will appear faster after any of these procedures so it is still best to take good care of your jewellery in the first place to avoid the initial tarnishing.

Perfect way to store your precious jewellery

Do you want to keep your jewellery safe? You might be surprised by the amount of damage caused by placing jewellery in a regular drawer or on top of another piece. Or have you ever taken your jewellery off at the end of a long workday and then promptly forgot about it and left it somewhere — such as on the side of your bathroom sink? Oh, boy! Quite sure a lot of women have. Get into the habit of keeping your jewellery safe.

Firstly, store your jewellery in a cool, dry place. Ideally, a jewellery box is the best option.

This prevents the coating of your jewellery from being affected negatively by extreme fluctuations in temperature which may occur during the day or night. Depending on the type of jewellery you are storing and the items you are layering them with it might be best to use small boxes rather than one large one. Or if possible pinch each piece separately into a satin pouch.

Satin pouches are a great way to store or carry around jewellery. It's not just a great idea for travel but for everyday use in general. They work well for storing earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets. They can be tucked away almost anywhere you have space like drawers, boxes and your handbag to keep everything together.

Taking care of your jewellery does not mean limiting it to a box in your closet. Your jewellery is meant to be worn and loved. Just like you, your precious jewellery needs proper care and a little bit of attention. Taking good care of your jewellery and keeping them clean makes them last longer.
